Malaysia kebarangkalian gempa bumi

Malaysia kebarangkalian gempa bumi

Tremors in Keningau due to active fault area

05 December 2012 | last updated at 12:23AM

EARTHQUAKE: No imminent danger as shocks are mild, dept to monitor situation

KENINGAU: THE Malaysian Meterological Department yesterday said the Keningau district in the state is located on an active fault area.

This was the reason it registered an earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale on Monday.

A department official explained that the active fault area was a weaker part of earth which had the potential to generate tremors at any time.

"However, the public in Keningau can rest assured that the tremors are mild and not dangerous.

"Our department will continue to monitor and alert people on any signs of an earthquake," he said, adding that the tremors were not the first to occur here.

The official said the worst earthquake which struck the state occurred in 1976 when Lahad Datu registered an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale.

Other fault areas which had been identified in the state are located in Kundasang and Ranau districts, as well as Beluran and Labuk town in Sandakan.

In another development in Labuan, Sabah Meteorological Department director Abdul Malik Tussin confirmed that a waterspout had been spotted south of the island between 7.45am and 8.10am yesterday.

"There was a storm when the waterspout occurred but till now we have not received any distress call," he said.

Friday, June 08, 2012

POLITEKNIK Ungku Omar staff were shaken when they felt a tremor and what sounded like an explosion yesterday.

Its deputy director, Muhamad Zubir Mohd Hanifah, said he was in a meeting with a few other staff when he felt the tremor.

He said the tremor, which lasted for about a minute, rattled the doors and windows in the room.

“We were stunned and speechless for while. After the situation returned to normal, we thought our staff who were shifting things in the building had dropped something heavy,” he said.

Mohamad Zubir said minutes later, Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived after a staff contacted them.

“Firemen conducted checks on the buildings where they found nothing amiss and left after 15 minutes,” he said.

Mohamad Zubir said students were on their semester break since the end of last month and there were only about 400 people at the institute yesterday.

It is learned that the tremor was also felt in Gunung Rapat and other places in the Kinta Valley.

A spokesman for the Ipoh fire station said they were unable to confirm the cause of the tremor.

The Meteorological Department ruled out the possibility of an earthquake.

A spokesman said its Ipoh station recorded an unusual wave between 11.10am and 11.20am.

“The characteristic of the wave was abnormal and confined to Ipoh, pointing to a local cause due to an activity in the area,” he told The Malay Mail.

At press time the authorities were still unable to confirm the cause of the tremor.

Punca gegaran belum dikenal pasti, Stesen Meteorologi tak terima laporan

8 Jun 2012

IPOH – Lebih 400 kakitangan Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) gempar apabila merasai gegaran hampir tiga minit, pagi semalam.

Janda Baik, Bukit Tinggi bear brunt of tremors

15 April 2012

JOLTED: Residents in Janda Baik preparing for another series of quakes

BENTONG: AFTER experiencing the most number of tremors between 2007 and 2009, residents of Janda Baik are preparing for another series of small earthquakes after Wednesday's 8.6-magnitude temblor which occurred off Sumatra.

The small town with 720 homes and some 3,700 people were in the limelight when 37 out of 40 of the seismic incidences occurred along a fault line near here were felt by them and those in Bukit Tinggi.

The three other tremors were felt in Jerantut, and Manjung in Perak.

"Although it was only a slight tremor, we were still scared," said Janda Baik village security and development committee chairman Zahari Raof.

Based on the Meteorological Department's records, the tremors were detected at Bukit Tinggi and Janda Baik, along a fault line 15km wide and 70km long, with the strongest one measuring 3.5 in magnitude on the Richter scale.

Zahari said the authorities had met the residents several times after they had expressed concern over the incidents.

The residents were relieved when they were told that any earthquake in that area could not possibly surpass the 5.0 in magnitude despite Bukit Tinggi and Janda Baik being located on the fault line.

Zahari said the residents had previously requested that the government conduct a detailed study on the soil structure along the fault line when they found some damage on the buildings, including cracks on walls and floors in some buildings.

"We hope a similar study will also be done following the recent quake off Sumatra. Although no buildings collapsed, we are still concerned about our safety."

Zahari said Janda Baik and Bukit Tinggi were first hit by tremors in Nov 2007 following a series of earthquakes that occurred in Indonesia and the Philippines.

Although no tremor was reported here since 2009, Malaysia was not spared minor earthquakes with the latest one recording 3.2 on the Richter scale felt in Mersing on March 29 this year.

The Meteorological Department's records also showed that seven tremors were recorded in Sabah last year while another nine in 2010.

In 2009, two tremors were recorded in Sabah and one each in Jerantut and Manjung.

However, the earthquakes were only between 2.4 and 4.3 on the Richter scale.

The department has 17 seismology stations operating in Malaysia, capable of detecting quakes and tremors that occur in the country.

The last major earthquake of 6.2 magnitude, happened in Lahad Datu, Sabah, on July 26, 1976.
